Scotland fans baffled after Celtic star Callum McGregor left out of Gordon Strachan’s Scotland squad to face England in crucial World Cup qualifier

SCOTLAND fans have hit out on social media after Celtic star Callum McGregor was left out of Gordon Strachan’s squad to face England.

McGregor – a revelation in Brendan Rodgers’ Invincibles team this season – was expected to be named among the players who will clash with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions at Hampden in next month’s crucial World Cup qualifier.

But the 23-year-old has been overlooked – with Aberdeen’s Kenny McLean and John McGinn of Hibs getting the nod.

Jamie Murphy, just weeks after earning promotion to the English Premier League with Brighton, and McLean’s Dons teammate Mark Reynolds have also been called up.

The decision to snub McGregor led to the playmaker trending on Twitter, with supporters raging.

When asked about it, Strachan said: "I think everybody knows that [in midfield] is where we're strong and that's were you need to be strong these days.

"There are a lot of other midfield players who I've seen recently and you think, 'If it wasn't so strong they'd be in in the squad as well'.

"Kevin McDonald at Fulham...he's had an excellent season.

"There are a lot of lads in who are unfortunate that we're strong in that area."
