Who are Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis named after and when were the royal baby names announced?

KATE Middleton and Prince William revealed the name of their third baby - Prince Louis Arthur Charles not long after his birth.

With his older siblings George and Charlotte’s names announced fairly quickly, the announcement of baby Louis' name was a little later than expected.

How long did we wait to know George, Charlotte and Louis' names?

Prince George’s full name is George Alexander Louis – but he is known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

The announcement of George’s name came on July 24, 2013 - two days after his birth.

The name was officially released via a statement issued by Kensington Palace.

Similarly, Princess Charlotte was also named two days after being born – her name was revealed on May 4, 2015.

The new baby’s full name - Charlotte Elizabeth Diana – was announced in a tweet sent out by Kensington Palace.

She is officially known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

Prince Louis' name was released four days after his birth, coming two days later than both George and Charlotte.

His full name is Prince Louis Arthur Charles and it was announced on Twitter by Kensington Palace.

The speedy announcement of the names of the children breaks royal tradition by a fair margin.

Prince William’s name was not released for a week and Prince Charles’ for a month.

Were the names announced on social media?

Prince George arrived before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had the @KensingtonRoyal Twitter account, so they shared Prince George's name via a Clarence House announcement.

In 2015, Princess Charlotte's arrival took the Royals into the modern era, with her name announced via the Kensington Palace Twitter account.

On April 27, 2018, Kensington Palace tweeted: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles.

"The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge."

Who is Prince George named after?

George Alexander Louis’ name was chosen with much care and is a nod to the Queen’s dad King George VI.

Alexander is believed to have been picked by the couple to honour the Queen, whose middle name is Alexandra.

Louis comes as a tribute to the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, whose grandfather was Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg.

Louis is also part of Prince William’s full name - William Arthur Philip Louis.

Who is Princess Charlotte named after?

It is believed the name Charlotte is a nod to William's father Prince Charles as Charlotte is the female form of the name.

Charlotte is also the middle name of Kate's sister Pippa Middleton as well as her mother Carole.

Elizabeth is both Kate's middle name and a tribute to William's grandmother and the reigning monarch.

The little princess’ moniker also honours William's late mother Princess Diana – with the Prince a believer of including his mother in all the significant moments of his life.

Who is Prince Louis named after?

Louis could very well be inspired by Louis Mountbatten, who was born Prince Louis of Batternburg in Windsor in 1900.

He was Prince Charles' great-uncle and was described by him as the "grandfather I never had".

An Arthur was last Prince of Wales during the Tudor period, more interestingly, of course, is that the legendary King Arthur could have been an influence on their name choice.

Louis and Arthur both feature in dad Prince William's full name, which is William Arthur Philip Louis.

Charles is most definitely there as a tribute to William's father, Prince Charles.

The royal parents will probably be hoping the name will bring him the strength and dignity of a King-in-waiting.
