Brexit will have same effect on EU that Berlin Wall’s collapse had on USSR, says Nigel Farage

Governments in Denmark and the Netherlands are already facing demands for an in-out referendum

UKIP chief Nigel Farage predicted last night that the Brexit bombshell will bring the whole EU crashing down.

He likened the result to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

He told The Sun: “The impact of the referendum isn’t just on Britain. It’s on the whole EU.

“What we have done here is knocked out the first brick.

“The cracks have appeared and it’s only a matter of time.”

The motormouth MEP added: “It’s a victory for ordinary people, little people, decent people against an establishment that tried to threaten and bully them throughout the campaign.”

He warned that fed-up voters in other EU countries could soon be queuing up at the exit door themselves.

Governments in Denmark and the Netherlands are already facing demands for an in-out referendum – and there’s even growing Euroscepticism in Italy. A recent poll in France found that only 38 per cent of people hold a favourable view of the EU.

Mr Farage added: “The whole world was watching the other night. This is an assertion of democratic rights against a ruling class. It’s a pretty remarkable thing.

“There is now growing Euro-scepticism across the continent.

“The EU is an unloved, unwanted, failing political project that has brought economic misery to the south and whose migrant policy has brought great division to the north.

“It’s done for and the sooner it’s over and replaced with a different kind of Europe –where we co-operate and trade together – the better.”

And  he assured those who fear for the future: “There is nothing to be scared of. All we’ve done is to re-assert ourselves as a normal country. Normal countries make their own laws, have their own courts, their own borders and choose who comes to live here.

“There are 183 countries in the world that celebrate independence days. We have just become the 184th.”

Mr Farage sits in the European Parliament on Tuesday. And he said: “My fellow MEPs will be spitting at me because this is the best job they’re ever going to have — a fat salary, pension rights, free booze all paid for by taxpayers.”

Mr Farage believes EU chiefs will try to block his six-figure pay-off and statutory pension of up to £55,000.

But he laughed: “Unemployment beckons and I couldn’t be happier. I’m the turkey that voted for Christmas.”
