Sophie Everard explains that we're meant to rest for 48 hours after intense work outs, meaning those of us heading to the gym every day could be doing more harm than good.

Fat loss, muscle recovery and strength gain all take place during that rest period, so give yourself a break and let your body take charge.

"Many of us believe you have to be exercising constantly for body adaptations to occur.

"Actually, it is whilst your body is repairing during the recovery period, that the body becomes stronger for the next workout," Sophie told Mail Online.

"Rest is critical to muscle growth, and to desist any symptoms of over-training."

So there you go, a good excuse to curl up in front of the TV tomorrow night - and give the treadmill and weights a miss for the day.
