Morrisons’ fillet steak has just been voted the best in the UK – and it’s cheaper than you think

The supermarket beat off competition from local master butchers as well as other big names

MORRISONS have been crowned the nation’s best cut of beef with their fillet steak - and it costs under £7.

The giant food retailer beat off competition from local master butchers as well as other supermarkets to scoop top place at the competition dubbed “the meat industry’s Oscars”.

The steak is from the British breeds of cattle, like the Shorthorn which is well-known for its texture and flavour.

The marbling effect on the cut of meat is a sign of a good steak, which gives it a greater depth in flavour and tenderness.

"We know that steak is a real treat for our customers and its texture and flavour are really important,” said Rob Youngson from Morrisons.

“So we’re really pleased to sell Britain’s best steak but the real heroes are the farmers that work with us to rear these amazing breed of cattle."

Each 200g steak will set you back £6.84, which is more expensive than a single beef fillet steak from Tesco which costs £6.20 on average for a similar size steak.

It's not the first time that Morrison's meat has made headlines.

Last month we reported that the supermarket giant brought back it's giant 1lb burger that weighed the same size as a football.

The cut of meat cost just £3 but was only in shops for a limited time only.
